A day after the California governor approved the state’s new SAFETY bill, Elon Musk said he’s shifting the HQs of SpaceX and X out from California – to Texas!
He cited the new Act to be the reason for his HQs shift, saying it’ll attack both families and companies in California. New HQ locations of SpaceX and X would be Starbase and Austin, respectively.
Elon Musk and the California SAFETY Act
California’s SAFETY Act – a law aimed at safeguarding the teens privacy of gender change, is having an immediate, but a different effect on the state’s business sector. A day after the law was approved by the state’s governor Gavin Newsom, Elon Musk said he’d move the headquarters of X and SpaceX out from California.
He clearly states that recently passed California’s SAFETY Act as the reason – calling the “law and many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies, SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas.”
Following this, he also quoted that X’s HQ in San Francisco will move to Austin. This is in line with The Wall Street Journal’s report from last year, which states that Musk plans to build his own community outside Austin – called Snailbrook.
Musk has already shifted Tesla’s headquarters from California to Texas in 2021, after the former state’s health officials shut down his Fremont factory during the COVID-19.
And with the recent announcements, Musk could clearly focus on all his major businesses from one place. Regarding the law, the new California SAFETY Act will bar the district schools from letting teachers disclose a student’s gender identity to anyone without the child’s permission – even to his/her parents.
While many say the legislation will help in protecting the LGBTQ+ students who live in unwelcoming households, critics also warn of hindering the schools’ ability to be more transparent with the parents.
