One of the most popular uses of on-device LLM is live translation. Companies like Samsung and Google have already introduced live translation on their devices. However, live translation is only limited to the OEMs’ default app, which is now about to change. This year Samsung’s most marketed feature is the Galaxy AI which brings tons of Artificial intelligence capabilities to Samsung devices.
These AI capabilities also include live translation and it seems like Samsung has done a good job with their live translation feature. The live-translation feature on Samsung Galaxy devices is pretty accurate and works perfectly.
Now, Samsung is planning to bring its live translation feature to third-party apps, including WhatsApp and Google Meet. Last Month, the South Korean smartphone giant announced its plan to integrate “Galaxy AI” live translation features into third-party apps. The company launched a live translation feature for its phone app, allowing users to translate phone calls in real time between two languages.
As per the tipster Ice Universe, WhatsApp may be the first third-party app to get the Galaxy AI live translation feature on Samsung devices. In a post on X formerly Twitter, Ice Universes says that Galaxy AI “will power” real-time translation on WhatsApp.
Currently, there is not much detail shared about how it will work at the moment. However, as per 9to5Google, there are two possibilities for how it will work. The first possibility is that Samsung and Meta are working closely to integrate Galaxy AI into WhatsApp. The second possibility is that Samsung is developing some sort of “overlay” for its live translation feature that will work on third-party apps.
In another tweet, Ics Universe says that Google Meet and WeChat will support Galaxy AI live translation. This indicates that Samsung will manage the work for live translation rather than the app developer.
Google may allow Samsung to run its Galacy AI live translation on Google Meet. But it seems very unlikely that Google will integrate Galaxy AI into its suite of Apps. Google has its own AI suite and, it is unlikely that Google will adopt an AI suite that is linked to one specific brand.
