Google is laying off hundreds of employees across hardware, engineering and voice assistant departments, reported CNBC on Wednesday.
Google confirmed to various news outlet that it’s focusing on it’s “biggest product priorities” and push for efficiency. The company has ditched over 12,000 employees last year, representing 6% of the total workforce.
Fresh Year, Fresh Set of Layoffs
As confirmed by CNBC, Google is dumping hundreds of employees across hardware, engineering and Assistant departments this month, to focus on it’s “biggest product priorities“. Furthermore, a spokesperson said “Some teams are continuing to make these kinds of organizational changes, which include some role eliminations globally”.
While some other parts of the company were also affected, share price of Alphabet were down 1% on Thursday, post this layoff news. Early last year, Google had cut 12,000 people across various departments, representing 6% of it’s total workforce then. Months later, the company has also laid off people from the recruiting and news divisions.
Expressing disappointment, the Alphabet Workers Union called the fresh round of layoffs “needless”. Furthermore,
“Our members and teammates work hard every day to build great products for our users, and the company cannot continue to fire our coworkers while making billions every quarter,” the group wrote in a post. “We won’t stop fighting until our jobs are safe!”
