Google Maps is adding a handful of new features to make your travel itinerary easier, and AI to help you make smart decisions.
The update is rolling out to US and Canadian users gradually, and will let users create lists of desired places, add social media links, and suggest curated restaurants and tourist locations based on recommendations from local experts.
Curated Tourist Spots and Eateries on Maps
As if it isn’t resourceful enough, Google Maps is now readying curated lists of tourism and restaurant spots for you, coming from local experts! In a new update rolling out to the US and Canada users, Google Maps will suggest desirable tourist places in more than 40 cities in these two countries.
Some of these recommendations would come from Lonely Planet and OpenTable, noted Google. This aside, Maps will also offer a curated restaurant lists of three kinds, viz Trending, Top and Gems. While the ‘trending’ filter will show “places that have recently seen a spike in popularity on Maps”, the ‘top‘ filter displays places with consistent popularity in the local community. Finally, the ‘gems‘ list consists of great but less-explored restaurants.
Users can also create lists of their desired places to visit in the Saved tab and link them to content from their social media. This aside, Google is also adding AI features to Maps, with the latest update helping users to make the right decision on food choices. As Google noted “When you’re checking out a restaurant and scrolling through photos of the food, we’ll use AI to help you identify what the dish is called, and show you helpful information based on the menu – like what it costs, if it’s popular, and even if it’s vegetarian or vegan.”
Lastly, Google Maps is also refreshing it’s design in the coming months, including reducing the number of home screen tabs and new pin colours for finding places on the map more easily.
