Google Photos – one of the most widely used Google apps and the default gallery apps on most Android devices has surpassed a major milestone. The app crossed the 10 billion download mark on Google Play Store.

Since its launch in 2015, it has been a go-to gallery app and media player for most Android smartphones and Tablets. The app offers cloud storage for media backups on Google Drive along with some AI-based photo editing features.

The app surpassed the milestone of 10 billion downloads on the Play Store in nine years. As it comes pre-installed in most Android smartphones and Tablets, it is unclear whether this is included in the total number of downloads or not. The app had surpassed a milestone of 5 billion downloads on Google Play Store in 2020.

Google Photos has been among the most widely used Android apps as it is used for Photos management and backup by most users. It comes pre-installed on all Android smartphones and Tablets except for the one that launched in China. Apart from Pixel smartphones, the app also comes pre-installed with Samsung and OnePlus smartphones. Samsung and OnePlus also ship their smartphones with their galley app. However, most users on these smartphones use Google Photos apps for their photo management.

Over the years, the company has brought many upgrades to the app to make it more usable. Thanks to the company’s latest advancement in AI, Google has also integrated several generative AI features into the Google Photos app. These generative AI features are powered by the company’s ChatGPT rival Gemini.

The most noteworthy AI editing feature of the app is the magic editor. The magic editor uses generative AI to make photo edits like changing the backgrounds in pictures or removing unwanted objects from pictures. Other editing feature includes Unblur, Magic Eraser, and Portrait Blur.

However, most of these AI-based editing features are exclusive to Google Pixel smartphones only. Users having smartphones of other OEMs need to subscribe to Google One subscription to get these AI features on their smartphones.
