Years after testing, Google is finally rolling out Project Starline in 2025 – its 3D video conferencing platform aimed at corporate meetings.
Google didn’t disclose a proper timeline for its launch, nor detailed more about the tool, but said it’ll be coming with the help of HP. And it’s also working to add Starline in Zoom and Meet platforms, sometime next year.
Google Starline for Better Video Conferences
As Zoom led the video conferencing boom triggered by COVID-19, Google is trying to lead the next development in this industry – 3D video conferencing solutions.
Google started working on Project Starline – a corporate-focused 3D teleconferencing platform in 2021, but held it in testing phase since then. And years after previews, Google is finally bringing the Starline to everyone in 2025, in partnership with HP.
While more details on this are yet to be released, Starline was earlier touted to produce a compelling 3D video of a person you’re engaged in a call with, with the help of 3D cameras and a custom-designed screen.
While it’s an interesting development in the remote communication space, the tool is more aimed at corporate meetings. And with many companies returning to work from office setup, we wonder what the scope of Starline would be.
A survey from Resume Builder revealed that 90% of companies with office space said they’ll have their employees returned to the office by 2024.
This is in contrast to several studies drawing positive conclusions on remote workers productivity, where many believed the new mode to be the future. But again, senior management in several tech companies thought work-from-home is a failed experiment, and began calling their employees back.
So the only hope is to push Starline for office-to-office setup, and engage teams at different locations. Google also said last year that WeWork, T-Mobile and Salesforce were testing a prototype of similar tech, so there must be a light at the end.
