This article will provide a step-by-step guide for enabling Developer mode on a Chromebook. Chromebooks are laptop devices that run on Google’s Chrome OS. The Chrome OS is quite similar to the Android OS because it has a store for downloading apps.

Developer mode is a special mode that is disabled by default, but when it is enabled, it gives users some additional features that are restricted to regular use. However, Google allows users to enable developer mode in Android and Chromebooks to use the operating system entirely.

What is a developer Mode?

As mentioned earlier, it is a special mode in the operating system. It gives users root or admin access to sideload apps, install a new operating system, or do anything else their hardware supports.

Prerequisites:

Along with the benefits, there are some prerequisites that you should know before enabling this special mode. First, it will wipe out all the data on your device, so take a complete backup before enabling it. Second, it will void your device warranty, so you know this before. After you enable developer mode, your device will be less secure from malware and online attacks by hackers. Your device might be slow when you enable this special mode.

If you want to enable this mode, check the step-by-step guide below.

How to enable Developer mode on a Chromebook?

Step 1: Power Off your device completely.

Step 2: Now, Power on your device by holding the Esc + Refresh button and then pressing the power button on the keyboard. You need to press this button combination to enable the developer mode.

Step 3: Release the Esc and Refresh button when the device Powers on.

Step 4: Once you see the “ChromeOS is missing or damaged,” press Ctrl + D  on the Keyboard.

Step 5: Next, you will be asked whether you want to Turn OS verification off. Press Enter to Turn OS verification off. On the next screen, you will also be informed that “Your system will reboot, and local data will be cleared.” If you don’t want to do this, press the Esc button to return and use your device as usual.

Step 6: Once you hit the Enter button, your Chromebook will restart and show you a display showing that OS verification is OFF. The OS will then show you a message for 30 seconds saying, “Your system is transitioning to Developer Mode.”

Chrome OS will automatically enable Developer mode. This will take some time, so be patient and wait a few minutes.

Once done, your device boots up in developer mode. You now have to enter your Google account and proceed accordingly.

How to Disable Developer Mode on a Chromebook?

Disabling Developer Mode on your Chromebook is also easy. Follow the steps below to do so.

Step 1: Every time your Chromebook boots up, it displays the message “OS verification is OFF. Press SPACE to re-enable.” When you see this message, hit “Space Bar” on your Chromebook Keyboard.

Step 2: The message “Please ENTER to confirm your wish to turn OS verification on” will be displayed next. Hit “Enter” to continue.

Once you hit “Enter,” your Chromebook will disable Developer mode and boot up in its OS-verified status. However, this will also wipe out all the data on your device, so back it up before disabling Developer Mode.
