How to Enable Aggressive Doze Mode on the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T

If you want Doze Mode to be more aggressive on the OnePlus 3 or OnePlus 3T, then you just have to toggle this feature on in the Battery settings section.

I am a huge fan of Doze Mode on Android as it really has done a great job at solving the battery life issues when the phone is not in use. I get that some applications and services need to run in the background, but this shouldn’t be allowed for all of them. For example, I get that I should be able to receive notifications for applications like Gmail.

This makes sense and I can understand the need for it to do stuff in the background. This shouldn’t be the case for all apps though.

Unless a shopping application syncs new items from a website, there’s no need for it to be left running in the background. I can say the same about mobile games too. I don’t have any need for any game I play to be left running in the background and eating up my battery life. So this is where Doze Mode comes in as Android monitors when I’m not using the phone and hibernates some applications when I’m not using it. OnePlus takes this a step further with a feature called Aggressive Doze Mode with the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T, and this is what I want to show you today.

OnePlus 3 Aggressive Doze Mode

  1. Launch the Settings application
  2. Scroll down to the Device section
  3. Tap on the Battery option
  4. Tap on the 3-dot menu icon at the top right of the screen
  5. Tap on the Aggressive Doze & App Hibernation option
  6. Toggle the Aggressive Doze & App Hibernation option on
  7. Then go through and unoptimize the apps you want to ignore this new feature

Explanation

So now that you understand what regular Doze Mode does, lets focus on this new Aggressive Doze mode that the OnePlus 3 is using. It actually sounds a lot like what the Greenify application does when it hibernates applications once they are not actively being used. I have written a previous article on that application so you should check it out if you’re unaware of what it does. It has a few features that aren’t included in this version from OnePlus, but overall it should do the same thing.

Doze Mode typically only triggers at certain times but this one from OnePlus makes it seem like it will happen more often. To enable it, we first need to launch the Settings application and then scroll down so that we can tap on the Battery option. From here, look up at the top right of the screen at tap on the 3-dot menu icon. Then you’ll want to tap on the Aggressive Doze & App Hibernation option so that we’re taken to the main page for this special feature.

OnePlus 3 Aggressive Doze Mode Toggles
You can choose which applications you want to be optimized, and which ones aren’t.

By default, this aggressive version of Doze Mode is set to off, so you’ll want to toggle it on from here. You’ll see a list of affected applications under this toggle and by default these will all be set to optimized. This means that all of these applications will be hibernated when they are not in use, and the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T will stop them from doing things in the background when it enters Doze Mode. There’s a toggle next to each of these apps though an tapping one of them will make it set to Not Optimized.

When an application is in the Not Optimized section, this means it will be allowed to operate in the background and will ignore this OnePlus 3 aggressive Doze Mode feature. This is great for work or important social applications like Slack when you need them to be left running in the background. You’ll also see some unimportant applications in this list though and they should stay in the optimized section since you don’t want them running when your phone should be in deep sleep mode.

Once you have this Aggressive Doze Mode toggled on, and you have your applications configured the way you want them, all you have to do is press the Home button to go back to the Home Screen because you’re done. The Android OS will do what it needs to do and hopefully you will notice it using less of your battery when it’s not in use (especially throughout the night).
