If you have updated to OxygenOS 4.0 on the OnePlus 3 or the OnePlus 3T, then you can follow these steps to turn sRGB mode on or off.
When OnePlus initially launched the OnePlus 3, it received a lot of praise from those were chose to review it. People seemed to like the software, the performance, the battery and even the company’s change in philosophy. One aspect of the phone that was criticized heavily was it’s display though.
OnePlus calls it an Optic AMOLED panel, which is just a regular AMOLED panel from Samsung with their own style of calibration.
It was this calibration that some reviewers did not like. AnandTech called it the worst display they had ever reviewed on a smartphone because of how the colors were calibrated. A week or two later, OnePlus pushed out a new OTA update that added the ability to switch from their custom color calibration to an sRGB mode. So if you’re not a fan of saturated colors, or need colors to be accurate for any reason whatsoever, then let me show you how to enable this sRGB mode on the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T.
sRGB Mode on the OnePlus 3 & 3T
- Launch the Settings application
- Scroll down and tap on the Display option
- Tap on the Screen Calibration option
- Then tap on the sRGB option in the list
Explanation
Having colors displayed accurately can be very beneficial for certain people. If you’re creating content like recording videos or taking/editing photos, then you may need to see exactly how colors look when you’re viewing the screen. If you’re just the average consumer and don’t need for colors to be accurate, then you won’t need sRGB mode at all. In fact, you may find sRGB mode to look rather bland (I know I do). This is all a preference here so you should go through this feature and pick the one you like the most.
So to start, you’ll need to launch the Settings application and then scroll down to the Device section. Here, you’ll want to find and tap on the Display option since we’re looking for a software feature that deals with the screen of our OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. In the first section of this page, you should see an option called Screen Calibration. I see this option right under the Night Mode toggle, but this location could change in a future update.
Tapping on the Screen Calibration option will bring up the place where you can change it to sRGB mode. You should see this OnePlus 3 sRGB option right on this screen and it will likely be right in the middle with Default on top and Customization on bottom. Naturally, the Default option will be selected by default and this is the option that will have the saturated colors that pop out at you. I prefer this mode but some people do not. So you can go ahead and tap on the sRGB option right here and you should see the change immediately.
There are three sample images on this page (you swipe through them to change them), and you should go through each of them to see how the colors change when you go from the Default option to sRGB mode. Again, things will likely look bland on the sRGB mode and that’s because you see the transition from how it is normally. sRGB mode will display colors more accurately and you won’t even notice how bland the colors look as time goes by.
As you can see in the image above, you also have the ability to choose the Customization option too and this will bring up a slider. Moving this slider to the left will make the colors look warmer (which makes colors like white have a reddish/yellowish tint to them). While moving the slider to the right will make colors look colder (which makes colors like white have a blueish tint to them). Again, you should go through here and experiment so you can pick the exact color mode you want for your smartphone.
