According to the latest report, Samsung and Apple remain the market leaders in global smartphone shipments in Q2 2024. Global smartphone shipments increased by 6.5 percent year-on-year in Q2 2024, reaching 285.4 million units, as reported by the International Data Corporation (IDC). Samsung and Apple hold their top spots with market shares of 18.9 percent and 15.8 percent, respectively.

The IDC data shows that global smartphone shipments have grown for the fourth consecutive quarter, continuing their momentum toward an expected recovery this year. While Samsung and Apple dominate the market, their Chinese counterparts are also increasing shipments to capture more volume amid weaker demand.

The list of the top five global smartphone original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) includes Samsung in the top position, with 53.9 million global smartphone shipments. The South Korean smartphone giant holds an 18.9 percent market share in Q2 2024, compared to 20 percent in the same quarter last year.

Apple secured second place with a market share of 15.8 percent and global shipments of 45.2 million units. The iPhone maker has shown significant improvement, particularly in key regions like China. Last year, Apple had a global market share of 16.6 percent in the second quarter.

Xiaomi occupies the third spot in global smartphone shipments with a 14.8 percent market share, having shipped 42.3 million units during the period under review. The company had a market share of 12.4 percent in the same period last year.

Vivo and Oppo ranked fourth and fifth, with market shares of 9.1 percent and 9.0 percent, respectively. Both BBK-owned companies shipped 25.9 million and 25.8 million units during the period under review.

Xiaomi and Vivo are the two smartphone OEMs that experienced double-digit growth during this period, driven by strong performance in China and other emerging markets. ”The growth in 2Q24 continued to provide some relief to the OEMs, though it’s partly supported by a low comparison base and the overall recovery is still at a soft pace,” said Will Wong, senior research manager for Client Devices at IDC Asia/Pacific.
